Well touhou started in 1995-1996 when ZUN was in college and no one would hire him to make music for their games so he made touhou (Reiiden ~ the Highly Responsive to Prayers) on his own for the PC9800, though under the group “Amusement Makers” that was a student group at his college, and then in 1997 he started selling touhou at comiket, then a couple months later made touhou 2 (Fuumaroku ~ the Story of Eastern Wonderland) which was the first shmup (shoot em’ up) and things just continued after that. Then ZUN made touhou 5 (Kaikidan ~ Mystic Square) in 1998 and then stopped and helped some underclassmen with their own games from 1999-2001, making the music and also including touhou characters because their games (seihou project, meaning western compared to touhou’s eastern) were inspired by touhou. Then in 2002 touhou made a comeback on windows with the sixth installment (Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) along with a music cd (Hourai Ningyou ~ Dolls in Pseudo Paradise) starting the “windows era” which had continued on to this very day with more games (shmups, fighting games, and spin-offs), print works, and music cds. Touhou is one of the biggest “franchises” in japan despite entirely being doujin except for the print works that were published by publisher companies, and is one of the foundations of internet culture especially in japan along with doujin culture and just how the japanese consume video games in general. tl;dr touhou shaped the internet from the shadows and has been for almost 3 decades now
